first_img The Varsity Blues women’s water polo team began its NCWP title defence with a convincing 22-3 win over the McGill Martlets on Friday night (Nov. 15) in Ottawa.The Blues squandered several glorious chances in the early going and also got into early foul trouble.  However, the team then found its legs towards the middle of the opening quarter and roared out to a 8-1 lead.The counterattack continued to produce dividends in the second period as Toronto outscored McGill 6-1 to take a commanding 14-2 lead into the second half. The Blues then scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter while playing a controlled half court offence.Freshman driver Lauren Dundee (Perth, Scotland) showed why she led the team in goals during the regular season by potting six markers.  Junior Caitlyn Tiedje (Calgary) also had a strong game finding the back of the net four times. Senior co-captain Kassie Fraser (Vancouver) netted a hat trick.  Sophomores Allie Vas (Yorba Linda, California), Sara Sutherland (Regina) and Sarah Wentling (Mohnton, Pennsylvania) each netted a pair of goals while junior Masa Stojanovic (Toronto), sophomore Emily Grossman (Santa Clara, California)  and freshman Kaitlyn Palmer (Ottawa) chipped in with singles.Next up for the Blues is the host Carleton Ravens on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The winner goes off to the championship final and the loser heads to the bronze medal game on Sunday.For more information, scores and highlights on your favourite U of T athletes and teams, please visit www.varsityblues.ca.
